Power Training for NJ Athletes

Before we move on to what goes down inside The Underground Strength Gym, let me preface ALL of that “Stuff” so the parents and athletes watching our videos can see my friend, Ultimate Warrior, speak about what it takes to succeed. We think the same and that just might be TOO much for most of you. Too intense, expectations too high…..

If you don’t fit this mold and understand that success takes WORK, you do NOT belong here…..

We’ve got NO room for lazy athletes, rude parents or anyone who makes and / or enables excuses. Excuses are for those who cave in to the slightest pressure. At The Underground, you learn to thrive under pressure….

Athletes need specialized training, that’s a fact. But… before we get specialized, we need plenty of “generalized” work.

Why skinny 100 lb kids are being told by Coaches to do a power clean is beyond me…. “JUMP with the weight” they say, but…. the kid is too weak to JUMP, let alone perform a safe and proper power clean.

Once our athletes develop a level of general physical preparation we can begin specializing and adding speed / explosive power work to their training. But, TOO much speed work and we now move from Quality to quantity and you are NO longer building speed.

It’s dangerous when you have a little bit of knowledge and just throw it on the wall and hope it sticks. I feel bad for athletes who are forced to train under a coach who wants to make an extra buck “covering the weight room”. These kids get ONE shot to make it right, they deserve to learn from experts.

Before I continue I’d like to thank ALL the dumb ass, ego driven coaches who tell their strongest and fastest athletes to train LESS at The Underground when we helped them get to the top…. I own a Football but you don’t see me trying to start my own Football team, catch my drift?

No Excuses Underground Strength Gym

The Underground Strength Gym is NOT for everyone.

The reasons are either because the parents are unsupportive, rude and / or intrusive.

Or…. the athlete is lazy and full of excuses.

Your first 3 months here is a trial period. Some make it, some don’t.

If you don’t make it you’re not invited back. Go to Retro Fitness or some other globo gym where doing half reps with half intensity is the norm and accepted as such.

If you make excuses that you’re too busy and I see you posting a million comments on facebook, I know you’re full of BS.

When you say the words “I’m too busy” I hear the words “I’m too lazy”.

Are kids truly “too busy” nowadays, too busy to train 2 hours a week? Do you Honestly have THAT much homework, homework that takes you from 4 – 10 pm at night, 6 hours of homework a night? WOW. Impressive.

Is it truly a financial problem, or, does Johnny not have a job yet drives a Lexus? Did little Johnny EVER have a job? I had 2 paper routes at the same time when I was in middle school, one in the morning the other in the afternoon.

If it was cold, raining or snowing there were still NO excuses. Newspaper HAD to be delivered.

Excuses are MANY nowadays, commitment is rare.

At The Underground Strength gym, we want athletes who are committed to excellence and have NO excuses. Same goes for the parents. Don’t be rude or intrusive, don’t tell us how to train our athletes or that he needs to do extra work at the end of his workout or needs heavier weight. We’re the experts and we create workouts that bring results, and yes, this means that a workout does not HAVE to last one hour.

Do I show up at your place of work and start shouting out orders? NO. Why would it be OK for you to do so here? Respect. Period.

NJ Athletes Need INCHES

If YOU are Offended, Then I am Probably Talking About YOU!

Most athletes do NOTHING extra. Not even an extra inch. They get discouraged because they think they need to go the extra mile.

Before you go the extra mile, you need to go the extra inch.

Watch and Learn…..

The speech given above doesn’t just apply just to football players, but for ALL NJ ATHLETES!

Here’s what I KNOW:

- 8 kids just quit a high school wrestling team because it was too hard. Their Coach is actually my old high school wrestling coach. He was awesome…. sounds like he STILL is awesome.

- It’s a sign of the times. Most athletes don’t wanna do any extra. They want facebook, cell phones, video games and fast food. I call this the pussification of the human race.

- Many Varsity athletes can not perform these basic physical tasks:

A) 50 push ups

B) 10 pull ups

C) Jump Rope

D) 10 Bodyweight Squats with proper form

I have more “basics” to add to the above list, BUT, movements such as push ups should be a staple in every athlete’s daily ritual.

- Most athletes skip breakfast because they don’t have time. Translation: “I’m too lazy and not dedicated enough to wake up early and cook myself my own breakfast.

It’s time for athletes to start working on inches.

Blair Wrestling Teams Up with Underground Strength Gym

The Blair Wrestling Team is a national powerhouse, dominating the prep national scene for 30 years. In addition, these NJ wrestlers are moving to many D1 wrestling teams and some even become NAVY SEALs.

Under Head Wrestling Coach, Jeff Buxton, who teaches more than just wrestling, he teaches life skills, I have NEVER witnessed an entire room, of fully dedicated and motivated athletes, not even at the college level.

This video speaks louder than my words, as you can see The Blair Wrestling team going through a workout at The Underground Strength Gym in Edison, NJ.

When Coach Buxton and I connected via e mail, he was 100% open to learning new methods to take his wrestlers to the next level.

This is coming from a Coach who has a team that hasn’t lost a prep national title in 30 years!

I’ve seen teams have losing records for 5 years or more and not have 1% the motivation of Coach Buxton to help their wrestling team.

The Moral of the Story: You are NEVER good enough, you can always get better. Wrestling is part of the puzzle, strength, speed, conditioning and mental training are other pieces of the puzzle.

Are you filling in ALL the pieces of YOUR puzzle?
