No Excuses Underground Strength Gym

The Underground Strength Gym is NOT for everyone.

The reasons are either because the parents are unsupportive, rude and / or intrusive.

Or…. the athlete is lazy and full of excuses.

Your first 3 months here is a trial period. Some make it, some don’t.

If you don’t make it you’re not invited back. Go to Retro Fitness or some other globo gym where doing half reps with half intensity is the norm and accepted as such.

If you make excuses that you’re too busy and I see you posting a million comments on facebook, I know you’re full of BS.

When you say the words “I’m too busy” I hear the words “I’m too lazy”.

Are kids truly “too busy” nowadays, too busy to train 2 hours a week? Do you Honestly have THAT much homework, homework that takes you from 4 – 10 pm at night, 6 hours of homework a night? WOW. Impressive.

Is it truly a financial problem, or, does Johnny not have a job yet drives a Lexus? Did little Johnny EVER have a job? I had 2 paper routes at the same time when I was in middle school, one in the morning the other in the afternoon.

If it was cold, raining or snowing there were still NO excuses. Newspaper HAD to be delivered.

Excuses are MANY nowadays, commitment is rare.

At The Underground Strength gym, we want athletes who are committed to excellence and have NO excuses. Same goes for the parents. Don’t be rude or intrusive, don’t tell us how to train our athletes or that he needs to do extra work at the end of his workout or needs heavier weight. We’re the experts and we create workouts that bring results, and yes, this means that a workout does not HAVE to last one hour.

Do I show up at your place of work and start shouting out orders? NO. Why would it be OK for you to do so here? Respect. Period.

THREE Videos below for athletes and parents to watch. Pay attention, because this is what we expect from those who want to become part of The Underground Strength Gym. NO excuses.

How Bad do YOU want it?

The Underground Strength Gym is a place our athletes will NEVER forget. The lessons they learn in this gym while going through their training to become champions will push them to the top of their game not just today, but from THIS day forward, forever.

It’s about living to be better than your best and better than the rest.

Undergrounders will grow to become leaders in this world.

At The Underground, Learn today and you will NEVER forget.

See you at The Underground….. maybe.

Committed to Your Success,

- Z & Team Underground -

9 Tips for NJ Wrestlers Who Want to WIN!

Sep 15

Scotty Training at The Underground

Scotty Training at The Underground

1. Train for Strength. You can learn all the technique in the world, but, if you run into an oxe of a wrestler, he will stop you dead in your tracks. Being stronger helps, we can’t argue about that.

2. Develop your own unique style & technique of wrestling. This is the opposite of # 1. Sure, you can be strong as an oxe, BUT, you need technique as well, allowing you to properly utilize your strength. Develop new wrestling skills (greco, freestyle AND folkstyle as well as Judo).

3. Compete Regularly. Don’t wrestle or lift with wrestlers who can not challenge you, you will NEVER improve that way. Often times we see highly successful wrestlers are a direct reflection of their training partners both on AND off the mat. That is what makes The Underground Strength Gym so unique. Someone is always better than you or trying to beat you. You can’t rest on your PAST success. When was the last time you competed?

4. Play other sports. Too often wrestlers burn out because they never take a break from the mat. I’ve seen countless great wrestlers cross train in various sports such as soccer, gymnastics, judo, baseball, football, spring track…. Wrestlers require athleticism. I also know wrestling is very demanding not just physically but also psychologically. You can train year round as an athlete, but wrestling year round tends to cause burn out.

5. Train Like an Animal. Run, jump, crawl and climb. Stop training on machines and isolating muscles when you need to focus on powerful movements such as hill sprints, pull ups, rope climbs / pole climbs, jumping, etc.

6. Develop “Farm Boy” Strength. Use odd objects such as stones, sandbags, tractor tires, heavy wheelbarrows, buckets, sledge hammers etc to develop a different type of strength. Your grip will be challenged constantly and your entire body will be pushed to work as a unit to lift in this manner.

7. Train for Speed. Once technique is on point it’s time start moving the weights as fast as possible. When using bodyweight movements use the same principle, develop control first, then, begin using explosive bodyweight drills for the development of speed and power.

8. Train the Mind. Surround yourself with like minded wrestlers who are highly motivated and positive thinkers, talkers and doers. Read books that motivate you and tell you stories of athletes overcoming adversity. Train your mind to bounce back from set backs or losses quickly rather than dwelling on the negative. If the mind has powerful thoughts your success on the mat will multiply BIG time.

9. Take Action. It amazes me to see countless wrestlers speaking of lofty goals such as wanting to become all state or wanting to be an All American in college yet they do NOT do the work to help them achieve these goals. Our wrestlers mostly train 2, maybe 3 times a week at The Underground, that’s all it takes to get the edge. Sure, some train more often, but, the majority of our wrestlers have had GREAT success with only an extra 2 hours of training a week. Don’t talk about success. DO what it takes to achieve that success.

NJ Wrestling Season, In The Air

Sep 8

September is here, the nights are getting cooler and I feel like I can smell wrestling season in the air.

Step up your training just enough, but not TOO much, as you want to enter the season fresh, strong and healthy, NOT on the verge of burn out. Wrestle or take up Judo 2 – 3 x week, lift Underground 2 x week. Compete at a few tournaments and test yourself, wrestling is about competition and you must put yourself out there, on the line, so to speak.

Some of the wrestling clubs I’ve visited that are AWESOME and might be near you.

CJA Wrestling Club in East Brunswick. New facility and Gene is a kick ass Coach, love this club!

Shore Thing Wrestling Club in Lakewood. Jam packed with tough, high level wrestlers of the shore conference along with BadAss Wrestler and Judo Beast, Vinny Santaniello. Best bet is to just show up and sign up in person, I don’t even know if Vinny has an e mail address :)

Triumph Wrestling Club in Ocean. Nick Roy, a former NJ state champ and a D1 All American brings an aggressive style that I haven’t seen in a while. A unique blend of technique and aggressive wrestling is something ALL wrestlers can benefit from. This room is intense and Nick brings the energy. GREAT club!

Elite Wrestling Club in Jackson with Steve Rivera. Another room packed with serious wrestlers and a fast paced style of training. You can’t help but get better & better every single practice under Steve. A kick ass club all the way around!

Cranford Judo Club. A world renown Judo Club located in Cranford. I would love to see more wrestlers gaining experience in Judo and bringing a different style to the mat. This place is amazing and will help your wrestling skills BIG time.

Make the decision and commit to dominating this season.

Wrestle / Judo 2 x week, lifting 2 x week. make it happen.
